The Department of Physical, Inorganic and Structural Chemistry (FOOS-Kemi), Arrhenius Laboratory, Stockholm University (SU) conducts research in the fields of materials chemistry and solid-state chemistry. Electron microscopy (EM) has been exploited and developed at the department continuously since 1974 using techniques in imaging and diffraction together with microanalytical. (See History)

The EM techniques have been utilized by researchers in all aspects of materials science. Specialized fields of the department are inorganic materials synthesis, structural studies and development of crystallographic methodologies. Materials presently studied comprise mesoporous crystals, nano-structured materials, soft/bio-materials, zeolites, oxides, carbon, alloys, ceramics, semiconductors, catalysts and minerals.

Our previous instrumentation is being upgraded with several state-of-the-art TEMs, SEMs, and FIB instruments for imaging, microanalysis and specimen preparation. This has been made possible by a generous donation from Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation (Main Applicant: Osamu Terasaki, Coaplicants: Sven Lidin (SU), Gunner Svensson (SU), Lars Kloo (KTH), Ulf Karlsson (KTH), Stefan Csillag (SU), Anders Hult (KTH)).

The specific goal of the EM Centre is to build a scientifically open and active centre with a state-of-the-art EM facility at Stockholm University (SU).

Chairman of EM Committee: Osamu Terasaki
